Reunion 2009 Awards

Citation Awards 2009

Each year at Reunion, the Alumnae Association presents the Citation Award to:  an alumna who celebrates a reunion this year and who, through service to the College community or church, or through achievement in her vocation has gained distinction and public recognition; or to a former faculty member or administrator of the College who, through dedication and character, has inspired others to similar achievement.

Susan Schlink Edel ‘69

Sue, and her husband Bob, a Saint Mary’s graduate, live in Winona and have three children and three grandchildren upon whom they shower their total attention and love. She is an accomplished baker and chef, loves to entertain, has traveled extensively, likes to camp, play bridge, read, book club and crafts, especially create greeting cards.

Her volunteer endeavors include: charter member of Birthright of Winona, where she is a volunteer counselor, conducts their annual Angel Drive and schedules volunteer shifts. She also serves on the Foundation Board and Operational Board at St. Anne Extended Healthcare, is active in Winona Volunteer Services food shelf, Winona Adoption group, Winona Foundation, the United Way and previously the Catholic Charities Diocesan Board.

Sue was instrumental in the CSTea House restoration project and serves as treasurer.  She is also a member of the Saint Teresa Institute Advisory Board, served on the Winona City Council for ten years and is treasurer for her local Minnesota legislator.

Sue is the quintessential example of an outstanding Teresan graduate whose zest for life, volunteerism, and service to her Church, community and educational communities is an inspiration to us all.

Barbara Durand, RN, EdD, FAAA, ‘59

Barbara Durand, RN, EdD, FAAN, is Professor and Dean Emerita of the College of Nursing at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. During her professional career she has filled a range of nursing roles including staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist, pediatric nurse practitioner, educator, consultant and administrator.  She began her nursing career in 1959 as a pediatric nurse at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Barbara collaborated in founding the first pediatric nurse practitioner       program in California and also directed the program for many years.  She also co-authored the Handbook of Pediatric Primary Care, an AJN Book of the Year award winner, and has won many prestigious awards.

After graduating from College of Saint Teresa, she continued her education at University of California, San Francisco and her Doctorate from the University of San Francisco.

Barbara has devoted her professional career to caring for children and families, educating others to care for children and families, and to making the profoundly valuable contributions of nurses more visible to legislators, policy makers, other disciplines and the public.

2009 CST Staff Service Award

Sister Ralph Jahner

The first recipient of the CST Staff Service Award is Sister Ralph Jahner, who many of us fondly remember for her work in the Lourdes Hall kitchen and bake shop preparing scrumptious treats.

Sister Ralph was born near Dickinson, ND.   She entered the Franciscans in 1938 and was sent to CST in 1941 where she worked in Food Service.  In 1942 she enrolled in a correspondence course through the American School of Cake Decorating and is a charter member of the International Cake Exploration Societe founded in 1976.

Sister Ralph spent forty years in Lourdes Hall kitchen and seven years at the Tau Center. In 1987 she went to Assisi Heights where she continues to bake for anyone who asks. She calls this her retirement ministry. Highlights include: Saint Marys Hospital Centennial cake, Saint Mary’s College 75th anniversary cake (which was a scale model of Saint Mary’s Hall and took over 200 hours to create), and many wedding cakes for CST alumnae.

Thank you for your years of service to our staff and students.

Poverello Foundation Receives Collection

Thank you for all your generosity given during reunion weekend, especially our offertory collection.  Because of your kind thoughtfulness, we were able to raise $2,200 to the Poverello Foundation, which assists Saint Marys Hospital patients in financial need.

Please know that your good works have benefited many in the Rochester community and beyond.  May God continue to bless you with the spirit and life for the Poverello Mission!

Thank you Class Chairs!!!

Your help with the 2009

reunion activities made it

fun for all!

G.I.F.T.S. Men’s Homeless Shelter Basket Benefits

Thank you to the lucky winners of the basket auction. Nearly $1,000 was raised for the G.I.F.T.S. (God Is Faithful Temporary Shelter) program near Janesville, WI.  The men’s homeless shelter is open and free to single men (18 years of age or older) needing a warm safe place to spend the night. The program rotates from church to church, one week at a time, and is open from October thru April.  Thanks to our generosity of Teresans, the winter months were a little easier for those less fortunate.
